The Child Healthcare Problem Identification Programme (ChildPIP) records the circumstances of child deaths in a network of South African hospitals. Because many of the institutions were not web connected, we had to innovate a very sophisticated data transferring and amalgamating system based on XML and using database trigger techniques to ensure a robust system that maintains data accuracy in the face of ad hoc data interchange. The system also incorporates a data visualisation and graphing tool that allows doctors in far-flung hospitals to instantly analyse their data in relation to other hospitals in the network.
