The Mpilonhle (“good life” in isiZulu) NGO provides HIV education to high schools in rural KwaZulu-Natal. The counselling process is done by relatively low-trained counsellors who are guided by a handheld device through a questionnaire that presents questions according to student response. The handheld devices use an HTML-based interface and the programme logic is on a web server wirelessly linked to the devices. The student responses are recorded as the interview proceeds. This allows for accurate monitoring and evaluation of the project as well as providing a rich source for research on student HIV attitudes and knowledge.
